FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

🔸 WHAT IS NEUROFEEDBACK?

Neurofeedback (NFB) is brain exercise. It is a technique that focuses on helping a person train themselves to directly affect brain function. Although it sounds like science-fiction in nature, it’s actually a reputable and scientifically-proven technique practiced by specially-trained psychotherapists. Neurofeedback, also known as EEG biofeedback, is a gradual therapeutic learning process that takes time and focus.

🔸 WHAT IS NEUROFEEDBACK USED FOR?

Neurofeedback helps regulate over-stressed or under-active brains and is helpful with issues of focus and attention, behavioral issues, sleep concerns, headaches, and emotional issues. Neurofeedback helps the brain work better so that a person feels better.

🔸 HOW IS NEUROFEEDBACK DONE?

Sensors are attached to the scalp (with a paste or gel) that detect brain waves, or your brain's activity, at specific locations. (No electricity enters your brain. The electrodes merely read information from your brainwaves and relays it to the Neurofeedback equipment.)

You then sit back in a comfortable, reclining chair and watch a large projected screen that displays a movie or game. We instruct you how to play the game or watch the movie, using only your brain waves. Everyone can do it! The specialist monitors your brainwaves and sets training parameters, which are customized to each individual; so the placement of the electrodes and the brain wave frequencies that are awarded are specific to each individual. This process gives your brain instantaneous feedback about its performance during the training session.

It is like your brain is looking at itself in a mirror and making adjustments accordingly. On a subconscious level it begins to “work out” what it needs to do to make your computer screen active. It then begins to produce more of the helpful type of brainwave patterns and less of those that are correlated with the symptoms you wish to address. With practice, your brain learns new patterns. Desirable neuronal pathways are strengthened and new pathways may be created. As your brain learns what it needs to do to make your computer screen active, the Practitioner gradually makes the goals a bit more difficult in order to challenge your brain to do even “better.” This is analogous to weight training workouts: as your muscles become accustomed to one weight, a little more is added until over time you build new muscle. With neurofeedback training, gradually your brain learns how to work at a more optimal level.

🔸 WHAT DOES THE TRAINING DO? IS IT A "CURE"?

Neurofeedback helps the brain to function better, and better brain function equals a happier, calmer, more productive life. Brain regulation issues do not constitute a disease; therefore Neurofeedback is not a cure, simply a way of helping you live more completely with fewer concerns.  Neurofeedback can be compared to physical fitness training – when a person exercises regularly, overall health, especially blood pressure, blood sugar levels, and energy levels improve. With Neurofeedback, focus, organization, mood and performance levels improve.

🔸 IS IT TRUE THAT COME ATHLETES USE NEUROFEEDBACK TO IMPROVE THEIR COMPETITIVE SKILLS?

Yes! The Canadian Olympic team utilized Neurofeedback and other biofeedback techniques to improve their competitive edge in the 2009 Olympics as part of their project “Top Secret-Own The Podium”.  It worked – they aced the Olympics. Neurofeedback helps athletes find and stay in the “zone” and avoid “choking” at crucial points in competition. NASA uses Neurofeedback to train astronauts, the US Military uses it to train their special forces and its used by many professional athletic teams as a way to give them an edge in competition.

🔸 WHY DOES NEUROFEEDBACK WORK?

The brain is amazingly adaptable. It is capable of making adjustments to improve its own performance if given cues about what to change. When the brain is regulating itself well and is alert and attentive, brainwaves (EEG) show particular patterns. We challenge the brain to maintain this “high-performance” alert and active state. Gradually, after 20 or more training sessions, the brain learns to stay at this high-performance state for longer periods of time and to retain these new skills.

🔸 HOW LONG DO RESULTS LAST?

In most instances once the brain has learned how to perform at its optimum level, it stays there and no further sessions are needed. Think about learning to ride a bicycle. Remember how difficult that was? Did you fall? And then, after a while, you didn’t even have to think about balancing anymore? At a subconscious level, your brain was sending messages to your muscles to do what they needed to do to keep you upright. Even if you haven’t ridden a bicycle in years, if you were to get on one today your brain would quickly remember what it is supposed to do to help you remain balanced. This is what happens through Neurofeedback training. We train your brain to work in a way that will help keep you “balanced.” You will not need to concentrate consciously on what you need to do to “stay relaxed” (for example). Your brain will simply function the way it needs to, in order for you to be comfortable.

🔸 WHAT AGES CAN BENEFIT FROM NEUROFEEDBACK THERAPY?

Individuals of any age can benefit from Neurofeedback. EEG Training can help a variety of childhood problems (bed-wetting, nightmares, attention deficits and other forms of disrupting or disturbing behaviors). Neurofeedback can assist adolescents who struggle with depression, anxiety or struggles in school. For adults, Neurofeedback can alleviate symptoms of physical and emotional problems such as migraines or PTSD.

Neurofeedback can help anyone maintain good brain function as they age enabling them to overcome challenges and enhance their abilities in sports, business, the arts or any other aspect of life.

🔸 HOW LONG DO SESSIONS LAST AND HOW MANY SESSIONS WILL I NEED?

Each session takes between 45 and 50 minutes. The actual training period lasts a maximum of 30 minutes. Additional time is needed beforehand for sensor placement and adjustment. We also speak with our clients briefly before and after each training session to monitor how things are progressing. We reserve 50 minutes for each client to ensure that no one is rushed and that there will be time to discuss the results you are experiencing.

When starting Neurofeedback training, sessions should be regular and frequent at 1-2 sessions per week. As learning begins to consolidate, the pace can be reduced.

Results from Neurofeedback training are seen gradually, over time. Initial progress can be seen within 15 sessions for most conditions . A typical treatment program consists of between 20 and 30 sessions, depending upon the conditions being addressed, with the average being 40 sessions. Current understanding among Neurofeedback providers is that it takes a minimum of 20 sessions for learning to be consolidated so the client can maintain the gains that have been made. Sometimes a client will complete 20 sessions, take a year off, and then return to complete training.

🔸 WILL MEDICAL INSURANCE COVER NEUROFEEDBACK?

Depending upon the concerns addressed, psychotherapy with Neurofeedback may be covered by medical insurance.Submit your insurance information here, and we will check on your benefits and inform you of your coverage!

🔸 WILL NEUROFEEDBACK INTERFERE WITH ANY MEDICATIONS?

With successful Neurofeedback training, medications targeting brain function may no longer be needed, or they may be needed at lower dosages, as the brain takes over the role of regulating itself. It is important for clients to communicate with their prescribing physician regarding Neurofeedback and medications.

🔸 ARE THERE SIDE EFFECTS ASSOCIATED WITH NEUROFEEDBACK THERAPY?

For most conditions there are no adverse side effects due to the training when conducted by a competent professional. If an occasional negative reaction to training does occur it tends to wear off quickly, or it can be trained away by the clinician, or both. Interestingly, our clients often note positive side effects. Someone undergoing training to treat migraines, for example, may report improved sleep, concentration, or mood.

🔸 HAS NEUROFEEDBACK BEEN USED TO TREAT ALZHEIMER'S OR DEMENTIA?

When Neurofeedback is used for those suffering from Alzheimer’s or dementia, it is called “brain brightening.” Neurofeedback cannot improve the physical degeneration of the brain. What it can do is help the brain access areas of itself that have not yet been affected by the condition, which can slow symptom progression and thereby improve quality of life.

🔸 DOES NEUROFEEDBACK CHANGE PERSONALITIES?

No. Neurofeedback training does not change underlying personality. It may be seen, however, that when some adverse behavior problems are re-mediated, the intrinsic innate personality will be more in evidence. For example, in the beginning it may be difficult to dissociate irritability, hotheadedness, or cruelty from a child’s personality. After that behavior disappears, it is easy to understand that it was never a part of the child’s intrinsic personality.

🔸 CAN NEUROFEEDBACK HELP WITH COGNITIVE DISABILITIES OR LEARNING DISORDERS?

We have had success working with clients with brain injuries and those suffering from many types of disabilities. Neurofeedback helps the brain become more efficient so that it works at its best capacity, whatever that capacity might be. If someone’s brain has been injured by a stroke or through surgery, the brain learns to “reroute” signals to create new neuronal pathways.

Neurofeedback works with learning disabilities as well. Brain regions and networks involved with learning (such as word recognition, reading comprehension, expressive language, etc.) can be strengthened, thus improving performance.

For example, Neurofeedback is used to teach children with ADHD how to calm and concentrate. It is rated level 1 'Best Practice' intervention for ADHD by PracticeWise (the research body of the American Pediatric Association).

🔸 CAN NEUROFEEDBACK IMPROVE MY IQ SCORE?

Studies have shown that I.Q. scores generally raise 10 to 20 points after Neurofeedback Therapy. This is not because neurofeedback makes people smarter; it simply helps their brains become more efficient and flexible.
