JAMES JOHNSON, ACMHC-I
MIDVALE & WEST JORDAN LOCATION | ACCEPTING NEW CLIENTS

“I live by the belief that the more we allow ourselves to be known, the more love and acceptance we are able to experience. I love this work because it allows me to stand alongside brave individuals as they come out of hiding and take bold steps toward being fully seen. Shame, trauma, harsh inner critics, unrealistic expectations, and dysfunctional relationships can quietly strip away our joy and keep us from feeling fully alive. My role is to help clients understand these patterns and move toward greater freedom, connection, and wholeness. I am deeply committed to doing my own therapeutic work so that I can show up grounded, present, and truly be an asset to those I serve."
I work with individuals and couples seeking greater clarity, emotional balance, and freedom from patterns that feel limiting or overwhelming. With seven years of experience in the mental health field, I support clients navigating anxiety, depression, addiction, unwanted sexual behaviors, performance anxiety, body image concerns, and relational stress. My approach is warm, collaborative, and grounded in helping clients understand why they respond the way they do- so meaningful change can follow.
I specialize in working with individuals facing addictions and compulsive or unwanted behaviors, as well as high performers and athletes struggling with pressure, identity, and self-worth. Having competed at the highest levels of Division I collegiate basketball, I bring both clinical training and lived experience into my work with performance anxiety, body shame, and achievement-driven stress.
My therapeutic approach integrates Internal Family Systems (IFS), Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), mindfulness practices, and trauma- and shame-informed care. Attachment theory and polyvagal theory strongly inform my work, helping clients better understand their nervous system responses and develop a more compassionate, embodied relationship with themselves.
I also enjoy working with couples to strengthen communication, repair attachment wounds, and build emotional safety. Additionally, I support clients processing religious or church-related wounds, approaching spiritual themes with sensitivity, respect, and client-led exploration.
I earned my undergraduate degree in Social Sciences from San Diego State University, completed a master’s degree in Leadership Development from Liberty University, and am currently completing my Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Liberty University. Originally from Canada, I have spent many years traveling internationally through athletics, experiences that continue to shape my perspective and work.
At the core of my practice is a belief in growth, resilience, and change. I strive to create a space where clients feel understood, supported, and empowered to move toward healthier patterns, stronger relationships, and a more grounded sense of self.
