Stress

Stress is healthy at normal levels, but can become overwhelming.

Stress shows up in our lives as physical, mental or emotional tension.

At normal levels, stress provides us with a natural warning system to guide us away from threats or potentially harmful situations. It also motivates us to complete tasks and advance skills and capabilities.

Symptoms of stress include a state of alarm, adrenaline production, short-term resistance as a coping mechanism, exhaustion, irritability, muscular tension, inability to concentrate, as well as a variety of physiological reactions such as a headache and an elevated heart rate.

When stress becomes overwhelming, it leads to:

  • Poor judgment
  • General negative outlook
  • Excessive worrying
  • Moodiness
  • Heightened irritability
  • Agitation
  • Inability to relax
  • Feeling lonely, isolated and depressed
  • Aches and pains
  • Diarrhea or constipation
  • Dizziness
  • Chest pain or rapid heartbeat
  • Eating too much or not enough
  • Sleeping too much or not enough
  • Social withdrawal
  • Procrastination or neglect of responsibilities
  • Nervous habits such as pacing or nail-biting
  • Increased alcohol, nicotine or drug consumption

When stress is prolonged it becomes chronic and affects an individual's physical and mental health.

Methods to control chronic stress include exercise, healthy diet, adequate rest, counseling, relaxation techniques and hobbies.
