ABSTRACT
Although spirituality can be a powerful resource to clients who are working through trauma, spiritual and cult abuse can be the source of trauma, which can create complex dynamics and dilemmas for clients. The wounds of spiritual abuse cut deeply and present specific challenges to both the therapist and client in the healing process. In this workshop, you will learn how to create an effective treatment plan to help your clients who have experienced spiritual/cult abuse overcome their trauma and thrive moving forward. Covered topics will include effective treatment phases of EMDR Therapy and how to get through them, working with the complexities of family, cultural, religious, spiritual and societal dynamics during the healing process, and helping the client to work towards health.
OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to:
- Recognize the signs and symptoms of spiritual abuse and/or cult abuse in clients.
- Identify appropriate options for resourcing client who have experienced spiritual and/or cult abuse in phase 2 (Preparation) of EMDR therapy.
- Appraise best practices in identifying appropriate first targets for EMDR reprocessing and integrate systemic dynamics and cultural attunement as key components in target selection, assessment and reprocessing phases for treating clients with a spiritual abuse history.
- Recognize common dilemmas and blocking beliefs clients with spiritual trauma often face, how those dilemmas can cause blocking or looping in the reprocessing phases of EMDR therapy, and specific strategies for working through blocking and looping in these cases, including cognitive interweaves.
- Identify ways in which you can facilitate the process of clients who have experiences cult/spiritual abuse reconnecting with spirituality in a way that resonates with adaptive information processing and health living.
