ABSTRACT: Learn how to effectively and confidently navigate
through complex memory networks with EMDR therapy! This workshop will
help clinicians to appropriately assess readiness for EMDR reprocessing
when working with clients who present with complex trauma and
dissociation. Participants will feel more confident in working with
complex trauma and dissociation with EMDR therapy by learning how to
select the best targets for EMDR reprocessing, developing skills for
helping clients to stay in the optimal zone of arousal throughout
reprocessing, and integrating an understanding of systemic dynamics and
cultural attunement within EMDR therapy reprocessing; making the
client's experience one of healing and hope. Additionally, participants
will be able to identify how to reassess and continue the reprocessing
work from one session to the next, without feeling overwhelmed when
other challenges present themselves in the client's life and in the
therapy office.
OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to:
1. Demonstrate appropriate assessment techniques in determining whether a client with complex trauma and dissociation is ready to move forward with EMDR reprocessing.
2. Appraise best practices in identifying appropriate first targets for EMDR reprocessing.
3. Integrate systemic dynamics and cultural attunement as key components in target selection, assessment and reprocessing phases.
4. Recognize the signs that a client is out of the optimal zone of arousal during therapy. Describe at least 3 skills (including cultural resources) that can be utilized to help the client to reorient to the present.
5. Summarize tools and techniques that can be utilized for effective closure of incomplete targets.
6. Teach clients specific skills that can be utilized between session to manage symptoms of continued dissociation and complex trauma.
7. Identify best practices for reassessment of unresolved trauma work and decision making in continuing trauma work.
